    Description

The Three Cent Silver Trime was used until it was replaced in 1865 to stop the Hoarding of the Silver Coin that was represented by the Trime.
It was the smallest of the US coins minted .
The 1st years of the coin had no lines bordering the six-pointed star.  From 1854 to 1858 there were two lines, while in the final 15 years of the coin there was only one line.
The issues from 1854 until 1873 have an olive sprig over the II and a bundle of arrows below.  Nearly all of the general circulation coins from 1863 to 1872 were melted in 1873.
Coin was designed by James B Longacre and had weights of .80 gram from 1851 to 1853 and .75 grams from 1854 to 1873
The coin continued to be used even though the Government issued a Nickel-Three Cent Piece in 1865 until 1889.
